Rustins French Polish is a traditional French polish made from shellac and industrial alcohol.
Suitable for all dark and light coloured woods, when a light to medium brown tone is required, or for sealing wood before waxing.
When applied correctly, Rustins French-Polish will produce a high gloss finish. Alcohol evaporates rapidly leaving a film of shellac on the surface of the timber.
During preparation, wood should be clean and smooth. If the grain is open, fill with Rustins Grain Filler. Furniture that is to be renovated should be cleaned with White Spirit and fine wire wool to ensure that it is free from grease and wax.
Apply with a rubber, which is made by wrapping a piece of cotton in a cotton or linen rag the size of a handkerchief. Pour polish into rubber and squeeze out excess. Dab a spot of linseed oil on the rubber and work in a circle of eight motion.
For French polishing, apply as many coats as required to build a sufficient layer of shellac.
To seal the wood before waxing, apply two liberal coats. Leave 24 hours after the last coat to harden. Re-coat after 4-6 hours. Use in a warm, dry atmosphere, ideally 15- 25ºC.
Coverage is 13-15sq.m per litre. To maintain the appearance, wipe with a damp cloth. Greasy or dirty surfaces should be cleaned with a mild non-abrasive liquid detergent. Avoid using harsh cleaning agents. Wax polishes may be used.
Rustins French Polish is sold in 125ml 300ml, 500ml and 1L containers.
